The Importance of Eating a Healthy Breakfast

By Jake Little

The best way to get your day off to a good start is to eat a healthy wholesome breakfast. The nutrients from a healthy breakfast increase your metabolic process, stabilizes blood glucose levels and provides energy to your brain allowing you to begin your day with clear, quick thinking.

While you are asleep at night your body’s metabolic process decelerates. It acts this way because your body does not need as much energy when it is resting. For a short period after you awake in the morning your body continues in this diminished metamorphosis or "fasting" state. Your first meal of the day breaks the fast, hence the name breakfast.

If you do not consume anything in the morning your body will stays in this state of reduced metabolism and so there is not enough energy for your regular day-to-day function. Studies has shown that consuming a wholesome meal first thing in the morning step-ups your body’s production of leptin which is a hormone that suppresses appetite so you will feel full. Individual who eat breakfast are more likely to go through the entire morning without feeling the want to grab a bite.

There is another all-important reason for consuming a nourishing breakfast; the energy from the meal fuels your brain. Some studies have unveiled that people who eat breakfast on a regular basis outperform individual who do not eat breakfast when they took part in tests and complicated projects.

The secret to a healthy nourishing breakfast is to consume a balanced meal. This means eating on carbohydrates, fiber, protein and healthy fats.

Carbohydrates and fiber can come from fruits and veggies, whole grains, whole wheat breads, some cereals, oats and other grains. Proteins and healthy fat can come from eating eggs, low fat meat, beans or soy. It is best to avoid sweetened cereals, syrups, white breads, pastas and pastries because they are quickly digested by your body and will instability your blood sugar levels that will leave you tired and hungry in a matter of hours. However, protein and fiber will make you feel full for much longer period.

Begin your day with the most important meal, eat a healthy nutritious breakfast and give your body a good start. It will make you feel energized and gear up to take on your daily routines.

Thank you for the reminder. It's tempting to skip breakfast when one is in a rush but intel like these do a great job steering us back on track. My New Year's resolution will be to eat a decent breakfast every day. Happy New Year!

Being raised in rural New England, breakfast was a must after the morning chores. My grandfather lived to 102 so following his example of oatmeal for breakfast was easy and still is today.
Good intel Jake.

I've never understood how people function without breakfast. You're totally depleted of fuel after sleeping all night, then you go another 6 hours or so before refueling. These folks must be hybrids with an alternative energy source that I don't have.
